The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread is a well-known spread among experienced tarot users. The spread consists for ten cards and is known for giving comprehensive answers to specific questions and providing a peace by peace breakdown. It’s also a good spread to use when you don’t specifically have a question but would maybe like to see what the universe has to tell you.

While the spread has a few variations and takes a bit of time to master, it’s definitely one to consider. Here’s what you need to know about the Celtic cross spread.

What Each Card Means:

Here’s what each card in the spread is meant to represent. If you’re new, you may want to copy down the legend and the meanings, or at least have them close, while you practice.

The First Card: This represents “the self” or your present situation. The card can also represent your current state of mind.  If you have a specific question in mind, you’ll have very specific, the card will reference your state of mind, or your current situation with respect to that question.

The Second Card: The second card in the spread represents the problem or challenge that you’re facing. Again, if you have a specific question, this card represents a problem that you’re facing with respect to that question. However, if you’re looking for a general message, you may learn about a potential problem that you weren’t fully aware you had.

The Third Card: This card represents the past events as relevant to the situation in question.

The Fourth Card: The fourth card represents the future. This is the future that will come to pass if things continue without change.

The Fifth Card: This card represents your conscious goals and desires as they pertain to the situation.

The Sixth Card: The sixth card represent the subconsciousness or the unconscious mind. The card may also influence hidden influence in a situation.

The Seventh Card: The seventh card represents your influence in the situation. This card may also show you how you, yourself, think that you’re influencing the situation.

The Eight Card: This card represents the external influences that effect the situation. This may be a specific person or the general environment.

Ninth Card: This card represents your hopes or your fears, sometimes both, when it comes to the situation. In some cases, your hopes and fears may be the same thing.

Tenth Card: This represents the overall outcome of your reading or question. This card is meant to be as interpreted as a summary.

Understanding Card Relationships

The Celtic Cross Spread can be broken down and analyzed in several ways:

The Cross: The cross portion consists of six cards on the left-hand side of the spread. The cross typically gives you a picture of the situation. Within the cross, the central two cards are the heart of the matter. Meanwhile, the surrounding four cards are the major events surrounding the event.

The Staff: The staff is the four cards on the right-hand side. The staff represents life outside the given situation.

The Celtic Cross is complex, but, after a bit of practice, you’ll be able to use the spread to get plenty of answers to your questions.
