What is a tarot birth card?

A tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card that matches your date of birth in numerology. Readers use it as a symbol of a lasting theme in your life, something to reflect on rather than a prediction. Some people also get a soul card, which is the quieter second card derived from the first.

How to calculate your birth card

Write your date of birth as digits and add them all together. If the sum is 22 or less, that is your birth number. If it is higher, add the digits of the sum again until you reach 22 or less. The number points to a card of the Major Arcana, counted from 1 (The Magician) to 21 (The World). The Fool is numbered 0, and a result of 22 also points to The Fool.

Example: 2 April 1976 is 02 04 1976, so 0 + 2 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 6 = 29. That is above 22, so add again: 2 + 9 = 11. The birth card is number 11, Justice.

What the soul card is

When your birth number is 10 or higher, adding its two digits gives a second number. In the example, 1 + 1 = 2, so the soul card is The High Priestess. Birth numbers from 1 to 9 have one card only, because they cannot be reduced further. Many readers see the birth card as the outward theme of your life and the soul card as the quieter one underneath.

Numbers 1 to 9 have no soul card. For numbers 10 to 21 the soul card is the one you get by adding the two digits again: 14 gives 5 (The Hierophant), 20 gives 2 (The High Priestess) and 21 gives 3 (The Empress). The number 19 passes through 10 (Wheel of Fortune) and ends at 1 (The Magician), so it has a connecting card as well.

Birth card and personality card

Many sources call the larger of the two cards the personality card and the smaller one the soul card. In this calculator the first card is the one you get from the full sum, and the second card appears only when that number can be reduced. If you only see one card, the same card plays both roles.

Using your birth card

The birth card is a symbol to reflect on, not a prediction. Read the keywords for the upright meaning, and open the card page for love, career and health. Cards that come up in later readings alongside your birth card are often worth a closer look.

This calculator uses the Rider-Waite numbering, where Strength is 8 and Justice is 11. Some older decks swap these two, which would change the result for those numbers. To explore all 22 cards see the Major Arcana.

Questions and answers

What is a tarot birth card?
A birth card is the Major Arcana card that matches the number you get by adding up the digits of your full date of birth. Many readers treat it as a symbol of your core theme in life.
What is a soul card?
When your birth number is 10 or higher, adding its two digits gives a second, smaller number. That second card is called the soul card. Birth numbers from 1 to 9 have only one card.
Why does 22 give The Fool?
The Fool is numbered 0, and 22 is the same position as 0 when the Major Arcana is counted as a circle. The soul card for 22 is The Emperor (2 + 2 = 4).
Is the birth card the same as my zodiac card?
No. Birth cards come from numerology, zodiac cards from astrology. They are separate systems.
